Zaq Squares

There is always that unmistakable pause in a conversation (or thought) when Zaq Squares bellows something raw in a song about pain, hope or some other melancholic moment.

You wonder for a second if you actually heard what you heard. The lyrics, although clearly defined by his experiences, often encourages one to drift into past feelings and happenstance completely unrelated to his (we know this isn't just weirdly us talking; we've asked complete strangers, and this they confirm!)

Zaq Squares can very naturally command an audience. For one thing, he is huge: in a towering, big strong teddy bear kind of way. We’ve seen this written in one form or another, and yes, to reiterate: he is rather tall.

But those eyes. Big, sad, moody, melancholic. Connected to songs and memories from the past; and his audience present this evening.

That voice. Delivering lyrics in such a lovely, deliberate and emotive way. It resonates in a way that I find unique to those who work sullenly and thoughtfully, with pen in hand (or so I imagine) writing words and observations on stacks of notebooks...It’s the voice of someone who pours their hearts out onto paper easily, and then stands there on stage singing words that are just beautifully intentional.
